Visiting an old friend

A familiar tree up to it's old tricks

Chelsea Rescue 3 on scene on Nepean Highway

Just after 7.30am on Mothers Day, (13/05/2012) Chelsea received a page to go to a tree down, traffic hazard on Nepean Highway at Aspendale. It soon became apparent that the crew were visiting an old friend.

ATJ01

This large branch blocked both City bound lanes of the Highway

The massive Cyprus Pine had dropped a large section of branch leaving another large branch hanging precariously over the road. Luckily, due to the time of day and the fact that it was Sunday morning, the branch came down without any major issues involving passing vehicles. Had the branch come down on a weekday, the Highway would have packed with peak hour traffic and could have created a major event with far more severe consequences.

The branch that was left hanging over Nepean Highway

Chelsea SES have been regular visitors to this tree over the past few years to a number of dropped branches and hanging branches. The major issue is keeping this major roadway clear and of course keeping the footpath safe for pedestrian traffic,

ATJ03

The road was clear but traffic was still kept clear of the remaining hanging branch

The crew cleared the road and as much as could safely be reached of the hanging branch before a cherry picker was called for to complete the task leaving the tree and the motorists and pedestrians below safe and sound for the time being.

ATJ04

Clearing the road was the main priority

As always, the priority for the crew on arrival is clearing the road. Because of the position of the hanging branch, one City bound lane had to remain closed until the cherry picker arrived, but the outside lane was re-opened once the branch was removed from the roadway.

Nothing left to do but wait for the cheery picker

The current phenomena of jobs on special days continues following busy times for our volunteer members over Christmas, on Good Friday, Anzac Day and now Mothers Day; can't wait for Queens Birthday long Weekend!
