Lightning left significant damage to this Dandenong North Home

Just after 7pm last night (07/11/2012) as lines of thunder storms were passing over Melbourne, Chelsea members were called in to assist Springvale unit following a lightning strike on an historic Dandenong North home.

Surveying the situation

Around 4pm, the home was reportedly struck by lightning leaving damage to the chimney and areas of the roof. The steep pitch of the roof gave the crews some extra challenges but nothing that members couldn't overcome. There were also restrictions on what could and couldn't be done structurally to the property as it is listed on the City of Greater Dandenong Planning Scheme of Heritage Overlay.

Bricks and tiles had been thrown over 25 Metres

Bricks from the top of the chimney were thrown over 25 Metres, landing in the backyard of the home, luckily, there were no injuries.

More than one area needed work

It was an interesting job for Chelsea member Tim, who having just passed his rooftop safety assessment scaled the roof to work on covering the large holes left by the strike. In a baptism of fire Tim and Wayne were on the roof for about 4 hours.

Tarping the worst affected area

This was a great example of the results that stem from the co-operation between neighbouring SES units and a great result for the home owners following such a stressful event. Units completed the task around 12.20am and were back at LHQ around 12.45am. Well done to all concerned. Also, many thanks to Chelsea Deputy Controller Operations, Paul Daniel, for the great pictures.
